What it represents

What the Third Eye Chakra Is About

Ajna is often translated “command” — the point at which the inner teacher’s guidance is received — or “perception.” It is located between the eyebrows, and it is the chakra most associated with the “inner eye”: the ability to see beyond the surface of things.

In modern descriptions the third eye is the home of intuition, imagination and discernment. It is the quiet knowing that something is right — or off — before you can explain why, and the ability to see patterns, meaning and possibilities that logic alone might miss.

Because intuition is so central to the work of a psychic reading, this chakra has a special place in the tradition Psychic Ames works in. But intuition is not magic: it works best when it is paired with honesty, calm and good judgment. Balance — not intensity — is the goal.

Reflect

When It Feels Steady — and When It Doesn’t

Traditionally, a balanced third eye chakra feels like…

  • Trusting your gut while still thinking clearly
  • A rich, usable imagination
  • Seeing situations from more than one angle
  • Comfort with not having every answer
  • Time for inner quiet — and the ability to hear yourself in it

Traditionally, it feels unsettled when…

  • Second-guessing yourself or overthinking
  • Confusion or difficulty seeing what you truly want
  • Ignoring gut feelings, then regretting it
  • Getting lost in fantasy or worry
  • Feeling disconnected from your inner voice

These are reflective themes, not medical signs. Physical symptoms have many possible causes — please see a qualified healthcare provider about any health concern.

Ways to work with it

Six Gentle Practices for the Third Eye Chakra

Nothing here requires belief, equipment or experience. Choose one and try it for a week.

Take a daily quiet minute

Before checking your phone, sit for sixty seconds and notice what is present. Meditation and mindfulness are among the best-studied mind-and-body practices for stress, and quiet is where intuition becomes audible.

Ask, then wait

When facing a decision, ask yourself the question, then scan the body: is there openness or tightness? Write down what you notice before deciding. Over time you learn how your own intuition speaks.

Keep a dream or insight journal

Keep a notebook by the bed and jot down dreams, hunches and what happens next. Patterns emerge — and you will learn to tell intuition from anxiety.

Try candle gazing (gently)

Sit comfortably, soften your gaze on a candle flame for a minute or two, then close your eyes and notice the afterimage. A traditional concentration practice; stop if it is uncomfortable.

Reduce input

Take a short digital break — a walk without your phone, a meal in silence. Insight needs space.

Chant OM

The seed sound for Ajna is OM (or AUM). Chant it slowly on a long exhale, feeling the sound resonate in the head and between the eyebrows.

Mindfulness meditation and yoga have research support for easing stress (see the NCCIH links below). The chakra framing is a traditional lens layered on top — helpful for many, but not a medical treatment.

Three Journaling Prompts

Set a timer for five minutes and write without editing. There are no right answers.

  • When has my intuition been right — and what did it feel like?
  • What am I avoiding seeing clearly right now?
  • If I trusted myself completely, what would I do next?

Origins

Tradition, and What Came Later

The seven-chakra map most of us know is a blend of very old Indian ideas and a newer Western reinterpretation. Here is which is which.

What the Sanskrit texts say

Ajna is drawn as a two-petaled lotus — often pictured as two wings on either side of the center — with a symbol of inner light and the seed sound OM. The classical text describes the lotus as white, like the moon. In the tradition it is the last of the six chakras of the body, and it is the seat of insight and command.

What the modern West added

Indigo as the third eye’s color comes from the modern rainbow scheme popularized by Charles Leadbeater in the early 20th century. The tradition of the “third eye” as a center of psychic vision was strongly shaped by Theosophy and, later, New Age writers — which is why it is so familiar in the West today.

FAQ

Common Questions

What is the third eye chakra?

The third eye chakra (Ajna) is the sixth of the seven chakras, traditionally located between the eyebrows. It is associated with intuition, insight, imagination and clear perception.

What are signs of an unbalanced third eye chakra?

Traditionally, an unsettled third eye is described in terms of themes such as overthinking, self-doubt, confusion or feeling disconnected from your inner voice. These are reflective themes, not medical signs. Persistent headaches, vision changes or sleep problems have many causes — please consult a healthcare provider.

How do I strengthen my intuition?

People commonly use daily quiet time, reflection journaling, body check-ins, dream journals and meditation. Intuition improves with attention and honest feedback — notice what you sensed, then notice what happened.

Is the third eye the same as psychic ability?

In many traditions the third eye is the seat of intuition and inner vision, and it is the chakra most connected with psychic practice. A psychic reading is offered for reflection and insight; it is not a guarantee of future events.

What color is the third eye chakra?

Indigo in the modern seven-color system. The classical Sanskrit text describes the brow lotus as white.
