What it represents
What the Heart Chakra Is About
Anahata is usually translated “unstruck.” In the tradition it refers to a sound that arises on its own, without two things striking together — an image of something that is present without being forced. It is a lovely description of what a well-open heart is said to feel like: connection that does not have to be earned.
The heart chakra sits at the center of the seven. The three below it are traditionally tied to the physical and personal world; the three above, to insight and spirit. The heart is the bridge, which is why it is so often described as the place where our humanity gets tested — by love, by loss, by forgiveness.
In modern descriptions it stands for compassion in every direction: toward others, and — often the hardest part — toward yourself. People come to it after a breakup, a loss, a betrayal, or a long season of giving more than they received.
Reflect
When It Feels Steady — and When It Doesn’t
Traditionally, a balanced heart chakra feels like…
- Openness to giving and receiving love
- Compassion for others and for yourself
- The ability to forgive without pretending it did not hurt
- Comfort with closeness — and with solitude
- Grief that is allowed to move rather than being locked away
Traditionally, it feels unsettled when…
- Guardedness or fear of being hurt again
- Holding on to resentment or old grudges
- Loneliness, even when surrounded by people
- Giving so much you feel drained or unseen
- Harsh self-criticism or difficulty accepting care
These are reflective themes, not medical signs. Physical symptoms have many possible causes — please see a qualified healthcare provider about any health concern.

Ways to work with it
Six Gentle Practices for the Heart Chakra
Nothing here requires belief, equipment or experience. Choose one and try it for a week.
Try loving-kindness meditation
Silently repeat, first for yourself and then for others: “May you be well. May you be at peace.” It is a traditional Buddhist practice, and mindfulness-based approaches are among the better-studied mind-and-body practices for stress and low mood.
Write one gratitude — and say it
Each day, note one specific thing someone did that mattered to you. Once a week, tell them. Gratitude turns attention toward connection.
Speak to yourself as you would a friend
When your inner critic starts, ask what you would say to someone you love in this situation — and say that instead.
Open the chest gently
Sit tall, roll the shoulders back, breathe into the center of the chest. Gentle backbends or a supported chest-opener in yoga can feel good; go slowly and stop if anything hurts.
Reach out in a small way
Send a message, make a call, accept an invitation. Connection is a practice, not a personality trait.
Chant YAM
The seed sound for Anahata is YAM. Chant it softly on the exhale with a hand resting at the center of your chest, and notice the vibration.
Mindfulness meditation and yoga have research support for easing stress (see the NCCIH links below). The chakra framing is a traditional lens layered on top — helpful for many, but not a medical treatment.

Three Journaling Prompts
Set a timer for five minutes and write without editing. There are no right answers.
- Who or what has my heart been protecting me from — and is that still necessary?
- What would forgiveness give me back, and what would I need before I could offer it?
- What is one way I could be gentler with myself this week?
Origins
Tradition, and What Came Later
The seven-chakra map most of us know is a blend of very old Indian ideas and a newer Western reinterpretation. Here is which is which.
What the Sanskrit texts say
Anahata is drawn as a twelve-petaled lotus containing two interlaced triangles forming a six-pointed star, and is paired with the seed sound YAM and the element of air. The name — “unstruck” — points to an inner sound that exists without being produced.
What the modern West added
Green as the heart’s color comes from the modern rainbow scheme fixed by Charles Leadbeater in the early 20th century; some modern teachers add pink for love. The framing of the heart chakra as the center of compassion and emotional healing was developed by later Western writers.

FAQ
Common Questions
What does the heart chakra do?
In traditional and spiritual teaching, the heart chakra is the bridge between the lower and upper chakras. It is associated with love, compassion, forgiveness and the ability to feel connected to others and to yourself.
What are signs of a blocked heart chakra?
Traditionally, a closed or unsettled heart chakra is described in terms of themes like guardedness, resentment, loneliness or difficulty accepting care. These are reflective descriptions, not diagnoses. Chest pain, palpitations or breathing difficulty have many causes — please see a medical professional. If you are struggling emotionally, support is available: in the U.S., call or text 988.
How do you open the heart chakra?
Common practices are loving-kindness meditation, gratitude, self-compassion, gentle chest-opening movement, meaningful connection with others and chanting the seed sound YAM. Go at your own pace.
Why is the heart chakra green?
Green is the color used in the modern seven-color system, popularized in the early 20th century. Some teachers also use pink. Neither comes directly from the classical Sanskrit sources.
Can grief affect the heart chakra?
Many people describe grief and heartbreak in exactly these terms — a heart that feels closed or heavy. Grief is a natural human response, not a flaw. A reflective session can offer a quiet space for it, and a counselor or grief group can offer additional support.
