What it represents
What the Solar Plexus Chakra Is About
Manipura is usually translated “city of jewels” — a picture of a lit, radiant center. It is the third chakra, and its element is fire, which transforms: fuel becomes heat, intention becomes action.
If the root asks “Am I safe?” and the sacral asks “What do I feel?”, the solar plexus asks “What will I do about it?” In modern descriptions it is the seat of self-esteem, motivation and personal power: the confidence to decide, to begin and to say no.
That is why many people connect it to moments of self-doubt — the project you keep postponing, the hard conversation you keep rehearsing, the habit of putting everyone else first. Strong solar plexus energy is not about dominance; it is about feeling like the author of your own life.
Reflect
When It Feels Steady — and When It Doesn’t
Traditionally, a balanced solar plexus chakra feels like…
- Confidence that is steady rather than showy
- Following through on what you decide
- Clear, kind boundaries — including saying no
- Taking responsibility without harsh self-blame
- A sense of direction and quiet motivation
Traditionally, it feels unsettled when…
- Persistent self-doubt or feeling like an impostor
- People-pleasing and difficulty saying no
- Procrastination and stalled motivation
- Anger that flares, or a need to control
- Feeling powerless or unable to make decisions
These are reflective themes, not medical signs. Physical symptoms have many possible causes — please see a qualified healthcare provider about any health concern.

Ways to work with it
Six Gentle Practices for the Solar Plexus Chakra
Nothing here requires belief, equipment or experience. Choose one and try it for a week.
Keep one small promise to yourself
Confidence is built by evidence. Choose one tiny commitment — a ten-minute walk, an email you’ve been avoiding — and keep it every day this week.
Get morning light and brisk movement
Fire is warmth and energy. A brisk morning walk in daylight, some gentle core work or a yoga flow can lift energy and mood; both movement and yoga are commonly recommended for stress.
Practice a boundary script
Rehearse a simple, kind “no”: “I can’t take that on right now, but thank you for thinking of me.” Saying it aloud a few times makes it far easier to say for real.
Breathe into your belly
Place a hand below your ribs and breathe slowly so the belly rises. Slow, low breathing is a simple, widely used calming technique. (Avoid forceful breathing techniques unless a qualified teacher has shown you how.)
Chant RAM
The seed sound for Manipura in the yogic tradition is RAM. Sit up tall, and chant it on a steady exhale, feeling the sound resonate in the center of your body.
Name three things you handled well
At the end of each day, write three things you did that took effort or courage — however small. Over weeks this quietly rewrites the story you tell about yourself.
Mindfulness meditation and yoga have research support for easing stress (see the NCCIH links below). The chakra framing is a traditional lens layered on top — helpful for many, but not a medical treatment.

- Where in my life do I hand my decisions to someone else — and what would I choose myself?
- What is one thing I keep postponing, and what is the smallest first step?
- When have I felt most like myself — and what was I doing?
Origins
Tradition, and What Came Later
The seven-chakra map most of us know is a blend of very old Indian ideas and a newer Western reinterpretation. Here is which is which.
What the Sanskrit texts say
Manipura is drawn as a ten-petaled lotus containing a downward-pointing triangle, the symbol of fire, and is paired with the seed sound RAM. In the classical texts it is described as radiant and fiery — the center of digestion and transformation, in the language of the tradition.
What the modern West added
The bright yellow of the solar plexus belongs to the modern seven-color scheme popularized by Charles Leadbeater in the early 20th century. Later Western writers linked the chakra to the development of personal identity and willpower — which is where today’s focus on self-esteem and confidence comes from.

FAQ
Common Questions
What is the solar plexus chakra?
The solar plexus chakra (Manipura) is the third of the seven chakras, traditionally located in the upper abdomen. It is associated with confidence, willpower, self-esteem and personal power.
What are signs of an unbalanced solar plexus chakra?
Traditionally, unbalanced solar plexus energy is described in terms of themes like self-doubt, people-pleasing, procrastination, anger or feeling powerless. These are reflective themes, not medical signs. Digestive or other physical symptoms have many possible causes, so speak with a healthcare provider.
How do I balance my solar plexus chakra?
People commonly use confidence-building habits: keeping small promises to themselves, morning light and movement, boundary practice, slow belly breathing and chanting the seed sound RAM.
Why is Manipura called the “city of jewels”?
The name comes from Sanskrit: maṇi means jewel and pura means city. It suggests a radiant, precious center — the inner fire of self-worth.
How is the solar plexus different from the sacral chakra?
The sacral chakra is about feeling and creativity; the solar plexus is about will and action. One is about what moves you, the other about what you do about it.
