What each chakra means — and how chakra & energy balancing with Mrs. Ames can help you explore yours.

The short answer
The seven chakras are the main energy centers described in the yogic and tantric traditions of India, said to run in a line from the base of the spine to the crown of the head. Each is traditionally linked to an element, a symbol and a set of human themes — from safety and belonging at the root to meaning and connection at the crown.
- “Chakra” is Sanskrit for “wheel.”
- The seven-color rainbow version is largely a 20th-century Western development.
- Chakras are a reflective, spiritual framework — not a medical or anatomical claim.
The map
Where Each Chakra Sits
The traditional map runs up the spine like a ladder: the lower chakras deal with the practical foundations of life, the middle with love and connection, and the upper with insight and meaning. Hover over any glowing point to discover what that chakra represents.
A short history
Where the Chakras Really Come From
An illustrated guide to three thousand years of the chakra tradition — from ancient India to the modern West.
The chakras (Sanskrit cakra, “wheel”) are the centers of subtle energy described in the yogic and tantric traditions of India, traditionally pictured as lotuses or spinning wheels arranged along the spine. Over some three thousand years the idea has grown from a single evocative word into the seven-colored map known around the world today.
Etymology

In the oldest Sanskrit texts, the Vedas (c. 1500–1000 BCE), cakra simply means a wheel — the wheel of a chariot, the turning wheel of time, or the dharma-cakra, the wheel of cosmic order. It does not yet describe energy centers in the body, but it gives the tradition its central image: something that turns, radiates and holds a center.
Origins in India
The first descriptions of chakras as points within the body appear in the later yoga Upanishads, such as the Brahma and Yogatattva Upanishads. There the body is mapped by breath (prana) moving through channels called nadis, meeting at a handful of vital centers.
The Tantric System

Between roughly the 8th and 16th centuries CE, tantric traditions — among them Kashmir Shaivism and Shakta tantra — developed the detailed system most people now recognize: lotus-shaped centers with a set number of petals, each linked to an element, a seed sound (bija) and a deity, strung along a central channel, the sushumna. Different lineages counted different numbers of centers; Buddhist tantras often describe four or five.
The most influential single source is the Ṣaṭ-cakra-nirūpaṇa (“Description of the Six Chakras”), written by the Bengali teacher Purnananda Swami in 1577. It describes six chakras within the body and a seventh — the thousand-petaled lotus, Sahasrara — resting above the crown of the head.
Reaching the West

In 1919 the British scholar Sir John Woodroffe, writing as Arthur Avalon, published The Serpent Power, an English translation of Purnananda’s text with extensive commentary. It introduced Western readers to the chakras and to kundalini, the coiled energy said to rest at the base of the spine and rise through each center in turn.
The Modern Rainbow

In 1927 the Theosophist Charles W. Leadbeater published The Chakras, adding clairvoyant descriptions and the image of spinning wheels of light. In the 1970s and 1980s the New Age and human-potential movements matched the seven centers to the colors of the rainbow and to stages of personal growth — most notably in Anodea Judith’s Wheels of Life (1987). This is the chart most people know today.
In short: the chakra tradition is ancient, and it is still growing. Its roots lie in the yogic and tantric wisdom of India; the seven-color map is its modern expression — a living framework that many people find a beautiful lens for balance and self-understanding.

Chakra work is a spiritual practice for reflection and balance, not a medical treatment.
How do I know which chakra needs attention?
There is no test. A helpful approach is reflection: read the short descriptions and notice which themes resonate with what you are going through. The “Which chakra should I read first?” guide above can help you begin — or call and talk it through.
Do I need to believe in chakras to benefit?
No. You do not need any particular belief. Many people simply find the framework a useful way to notice how they feel and what they need.
